Here is one of the Paw Paw fruit that grows in the woods here in S. Louisiana. Went into the woods last week with a friend to pick and observe the Paw Paw. My friend and I intend to have this variety named and indexed. It is a Paw Paw that is large and very good tasting....has some seed but not overly seedy. The wildlife in the woods are having a fest right now....its hard to keep the coons and other from getting to the paw paws.....installing stovepipe on the trunk of the trees is how we protect the trees that we want to get fruit and seed and scion wood from. Have a lot of the native seedling going and some grafted out allready with scionwood from this paw paw...............going to have a lot more. Hope to have it named by fall. Here we go...................Sorry for the poor pic quality David

David,
I think that's great. Maybe I'll have a "David Pawpaw" to add to my collect someday.
In the area I grew up in the pawpaws had an un-pleasant after taste. I was there this weekend. The hill side by the creek was covered with about 2 year old pawpaw seedlings. There had to be hundreds.
I would love to check them in 3 to 5 years and find one that has a pleasant taste.

Good deal Terry. I have grafted some of the different varities that are available but have found none better than the ones that grow wild here in Louisiana. The fruit is large and golden yellow and very sweet with no aftertaste. The large ones have 12 and 13 seeds which is not really seedy. If you go to where the seedlings are and they are true seedlings...not suckers from the parent plant....you can dig them up and transplant them to pots or your home location. I know that all you read says you can not transplant them but that is not really the case. You need to take reasonable care and keep them watered when you do and you will have success..........same way with grafting them. All you read says that only a chip bud will work but I find that a chip is the lease profitable way to graft a paw paw. I use a little modified cleft graft . I grafted out about 50 this spring using it and I did not have any failures...O.....it really shocked me after all that I had read about how hard to graft they were. I have been grafting and budding citrus for many years but do not get 199 percent take all the time....but it seems that the paw paw is very easy to graft......I am sure that my skills do not set me apart from other grafters ...so it has to be the paw paw that makes the task easy.
I have saved the seed from the largest and sweetest and have them in a moist environment in the reefer...getting them read to plant. Grafted some of this wild variety and hope to have them ready to hit the rest of the paw paw loving world soon. Thanks for the response and good luck with your paw paw quest............David

David,
I have tried grafting many Pawpaws through the several Summers. None of them took.
I collected budwood in the Winter while the buds were dormant. I grafted them in the Spring when the new growth started and none of them failed.
You have a great situation there. I hope your venture is realized.
