I am propagating barbados cherry. I have two kinds Homestead and Florida Sweet both of which are supposed to be sweet. They grow, bloom, and root very fast. Anyone else tried these? The rooting cups have worked well but I'm also trying rooting cuttings. I've rooted 2 in the rooting cups. One in the rooting cups just rotted and wilted.

What is the hardiness range on these ? I thought they were tropical only (unless container grown...).

My Barbados cherry label says that it is hardy down to 24 deg F, so at par with most citruses.

Thanks Joe. I just researched it through http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/barbados_cherry.html

Quote:
The Barbados cherry can be classed as tropical and subtropical, for mature trees can survive brief exposure to 28º F (-2.22º C). Young plants are killed by any drop below 30º F (-1.11º C). It is naturally adapted to both medium- and low-rainfall regions; can tolerate long periods of drought, though it may not fruit until the coming of rain.

I also searched about it and there are cold hardy versions, but the main thing with cold hardy versions is that they don't fruit a lot! So i'll wait and see. It could be that mine is mislabeled, so cannot say for sure until after the next winter is over. In case it survives and is the real deal, I will auction it off, LOL!
