Local gardeners grow a remarkably wide variety of citrus, ranging from grapefruits to lemons to kumquats to oranges. And, home citrus growers have been harvesting a bountiful citrus crop this fall. Many of those fruits will be exhibited at the Upper Gulf Coast Citrus Show at 7 p.m. Thursday at Walter Hall Park Pavilion at 807 state Highway 3 in League City. Members of the extension fruit and pecan committee will provide a presentation on growing citrus in the home landscape.
Home-grown citrus is of superior quality to supermarket fruits. Of course, a greater diversity of citrus types can be grown here than is available on the commercial market. Many residents grow citrus not only for the fruit but also for the ornamental value that trees provide to the landscape. Lastly, many types of citrus are easier to grow than many traditional fruit trees, such as peaches.
The citrus show is sponsored by the extension fruit and pecan committee and the Galveston County Extension office. If you grow citrus or youre interested in growing citrus, be sure to attend this years Upper Gulf Coast Citrus Show Thursday.
