This was my ponkan last year about this time-- after considerable recovery from spring (could not find spring pic)
This is the same tree this year-- thanks to what I have learned here.

Thanks Marc-- the lack of leaf miner damage is a result of regular oil sprays on any new growth. We definitly have miners-- they have been able to get some of the flushes on my kumquat and the upper parts of my lemon.
The great growth of the ponkan was a result of several things I learned on this forum. First I had to cure the disease-- sooty canker-- and if I had not gotten that done when I did--it would likely have killed the tree-- the main trunk had to be cut off about 6" above the graft. Then I had to stop the sprinkler from overwatering it and causing root rot/leaf drop. And finally, I had to learn not to spray oil when it was too warm. That along with proper fertilizing and trace minerals and it has taken off! It only has 3 fruit on it this year, but I am looking for a good crop next yr! _________________ Skeet

Looks great Skeeter. Ponkan grow very fast. I have a tree I got from STan three years ago as a small two footer grafted to standard Trifoliata. It is now over 10 ft at the highest point with many nice fruit on it. I'll have to take some photos later today. The only thing I don't like about Ponkan is that the branches are very thin & break very easy with a heavy crop of fruit. Taste wise they are excellent. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

Skeet, nice looking tree. From the growth pattern of the tree, you have done well. I can tell that it has been cut back near the graft. I particularly like the Ponkan Mandarin for the large size fruit it produces. - Millet |

Thanks Guys-- Millet, the taste of the first Ponkan I ever had is what sold me, I can only hope this climate will produce as tasty a fruit. Lazz, I can't wait to get a crop like yours! Do you have much trouble with alternate bearing? _________________ Skeet
