We had 3 litters of american blue rabbits this week for a total of 29 kits born about two days apart. However, Tuesday it was 80F and last night near freezing. Two of the litters had some mortality. The newest litter of 11 all survived. The other two litters had about 50% mortality so now we have around 20 left. If the kits get separated from the others they get too cold and die. For those that don't know, I provide the mother rabbit with nest material in this case pine needles for their nest box and she also pulls out fur for insulation. These bunch of rabbits just were a little bit too small to all make it! This morning I pulled out several cold kits and we warmed them in our hands before returning them to the nest. We may have saved two but time will tell! I'll check again when it warms up.
