I've heard about it alot from Millet mostly, but never even did a search to see what it was. Now I have, and I am confused.

I am now armed with what it is, where it comes from.... I've read also that it is "water-resistant" and "relatively waterproof" and I've read that it's the new alternative to peat moss....?? This seems highly contradictory and doesn't jive with me.

Can anyone clarify this? Why is coir so beneficial to citrus?

Thanks in advance, and happy St Jean Baptiste weekend! ( I know it's only a holiday in Québec, but I can't help but feeling festive towards all : )

I think water-damage resistant is better than waterproof. its not hydrophobic, its not quite as hard to wet as peat.

Its a slow-decomposing (usually used as the dust or soil type, not the rope type coir) soil additive.

The rope coir makes kinda interesting mats that can line hanging baskets instead of using plastic pots, but it still needs a container.

Garnetmoth, is certainly correct. The words "water-resistant" and "relatively waterproof" are not a good combination of words to describe Coir. The author of those two phrases must mean "water ROT resistant", and what he ment by "relatively waterproof" must also have some type of meaning that the product does not degrade in the container. Coir is easy to wet, much easier than peat, as Garnetmonth says, and it also holds (absorbs) a lot of water. - Millet
