Newer members to citrus, and perhaps some of the older members, hear various terminology, and sometimes really don't have a firm grasp on the true meaning of the word ,or words. So I thought it might be helpful to start a terminology subject.
1. "Dormant" Bud
Budding in very late summer, or early fall, is called "dormant" budding, not because the root stock is dormant (for budding would then be impossible because a dormant root stock would not be slipping) but because the bud stays dormant all winter. In the spring dormant buds, however, can start growth at least a full month before the spring buds, since the dormant buds have already united with the root stock in the fall, while the spring buds need a month or so for union before they can grow.
