New Citrangequat Discovered!

A citrus customer of mine who has a farm in South Georgia has been
corresponding with me via email about some kerajis and other hardy citrus he
has growing there. He mentioned a very large citrangequat type that he has
and I asked him to send a sample of the fruit to me for ( taste testing) I
was very surprised at the size and taste of this cultivar. The size is as
large or larger than grocery store lemons.. more in line with a small meyer,
Id say. The taste of the one he sent me is a dead ringer for a lime. The
fruit I tasted was still green with not even a hint of coloring yet but the
lime taste was much more"limey" than the regular thomasville citrangequats
Ive tasted in the past. The flesh was still a lime green color as opposed
to the orange flesh it will have once ripe.. See the picture of the ripend
fruits. When I emailed my contact about the cold hardiness of this
particular fruit, he said it has been exposed to 15 F in past winters and
should tolerate even colder since it sailed thru the 15F test. Ive
requested budwood for the new supersized citrangequat and have been promised
a few sticks come spring when my rootstocks will be slipping. I keep saying
Ive got to stop somewhere but new types keep cropping up and here I go
again! Smile Any supportive encouraging words from my other "citruholic"
friends? Ive got it BAD! LOL

I'm afraid I'm only at the beginning of that curve and I'm already running out of room! Oh boy I'll be thrown out in no time!

Some of us sacrifice one branch to accomodate another variety. Too bad for us in California, we cannot import citrus plant parts as easy as other people here.

Thanks to Laaz for posting the message and pictures of this new citrangequat. I know how to send messages and I know how to send pictures from my file. Just havent figured out how to post them on this new forum. I will have to get Laaz to give me some computer lessons in exchange for some citrus! Smile

Yeh, you are a sick man McKenzie! How many have you accumulate this week?...lets see a new changsha, a calamandarin and a unknown citrarangequat? Not to mention that Beautyberry, and lord knows what else! Have you ever thought about getting them to bury you in a citruswood casket? Maybe with a sack of Satsumas? lol (Now, when you have a little budwood to spare, let me know.)

Kidding aside, I notice the neck on the single fruit seems much longer than the ones on the tree. Is that neck typical? Do you know when the picture was taken? Do you know if it sweetens up like a Thomasville when it gets ripe?
