New Citrangequat Discovered!
A citrus customer of mine who has a farm in South Georgia has been
corresponding with me via email about some kerajis and other hardy citrus he
has growing there. He mentioned a very large citrangequat type that he has
and I asked him to send a sample of the fruit to me for ( taste testing) I
was very surprised at the size and taste of this cultivar. The size is as
large or larger than grocery store lemons.. more in line with a small meyer,
Id say. The taste of the one he sent me is a dead ringer for a lime. The
fruit I tasted was still green with not even a hint of coloring yet but the
lime taste was much more"limey" than the regular thomasville citrangequats
Ive tasted in the past. The flesh was still a lime green color as opposed
to the orange flesh it will have once ripe.. See the picture of the ripend
fruits. When I emailed my contact about the cold hardiness of this
particular fruit, he said it has been exposed to 15 F in past winters and
should tolerate even colder since it sailed thru the 15F test. Ive
requested budwood for the new supersized citrangequat and have been promised
a few sticks come spring when my rootstocks will be slipping. I keep saying
Ive got to stop somewhere but new types keep cropping up and here I go
again!
Any supportive encouraging words from my other "citruholic"
friends? Ive got it BAD! LOL
