Hi all:

Hope everybody had a good summer of citrus growing! I'll be posting some pix of mine later tonight or this week.

Anyway, does anybody know of a "low nitrogen" (but higher P and K) fertilizer for citrus? Everything I have read about citrus here in Arizona (Tucson) indicates the last fertilization should be with a low N fertilizer to minimize new growth but give the plant some strength for the upcoming colder season.

Also, I have a bunch of left-over bone meal from another cactus project and am wondering if this would be useful for sprinkling on the ground under my citrus?

Regards,

P.

Hi pertman,

I don't know the answer to your question, but I will tell you I've been doing my last fertilization around Labor Day with the same fertilizer I used for my first two applications with no ill effects for 10+ years both in midtown Tucson and out here in the sticks, even during our hundred-year freeze of 2011. Perhaps I should read more...

Hopefully bada bing or turtleman will jump in with their thoughts on this...

Keeping it simple,
BC

If your soil has adequate amounts of phosphorus in it, you can skip it entirely, for years. Unless it's quite deficient, the common notion that it improves cold hardiness, promotes root growth, etc., is all false. So you could use just a source of K, such as sulfate of potash or sul-po-mag (Kmag), with a little Milorganite or other N source to your liking.
