Thats a real nice filifera-we have so few of them in the east. Ole Skyduster (robusta) is ubiquitous in peninsular Florida but is much more cold sensitive than filifera (we have on occassion lost large robustas in northern Florida during hard freezes)- I have seen only a few filiferas planted in northern Florida (some are in Panama City and a few are in Tallahassee)- they really should be trialed more here.I would like to plant some of the filifera x robusta hybrids on the FSU campus in the future- I think that it would be cool to have a cluster of 3 Washingtonias-both of the parents and the hybrid planted together. _________________

Hi David. I circled the area for 4 blocks, no other Washingtonia's in the area... I collected a bunch of seed under it & put them in the germinator. They should come true & pure.
Did you ever find the Chamaedorea you were looking for ? If not contact Robert Chumley he has some very nice Chamaedorea. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

Wow, surprise! McDonald's management do have a brain. I am in North Orangeburg and am looking to buy W. filifera with 3 to 10 feet of clear trunk. For now I'm growing my own thread-bearing californians in pots. Some of them are from seeds of a mother tree growing somewhere in Tennessee (as I was told, it grows in Zone 7A or even 6B).
Why I think the hardy W. filifera story from TN could be true? Because germination rate of W. filifera typically is about 80-90% but the hardy one's seed germinate at around 20% rate and are much more expensive.
30-50 years later contact me, I may have a monster for you, if you can afford one. LOL |

W. filifera is a very fast growing palm. You can get 3 ft of trunk in about 4-5 years. Robusta is even fater. I have two Robusta in my yard that I planted from seed 7 years ago, they are now over 20 ft tall.
There are always seed on the ground below that monster & I have a few growing in containers until they get some size to them. W. filifera seen to die off very easy at a small size with our humid wet winters. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

Laaz, I looked that palm up in the book "An Encyclopedia Of Cultivated Palms". It says that fresh seed germinates within 30 days. Seed that is found under the tree dried out completely and dehydrated may take three months to germinate. The radicle ranges from 1 ti 3 inches so a deep container a minimum of 6 inches deep should be used. If anyone can grow it you can. - Millet |
