Wasn't sure which of the categories this belonged in, but I figured as I grow all of my citrus in containers maybe this would be my best shot Very Happy

I wondered if anyone had done any experimenting with vermicomposting (composting with worms). I was wanting to try it, as I'm pretty confined on my gardening during the winter months and it would be fun to have a little project to take care of that could potentially benefit my plants in the relatively near future.

Anyways, if anyone has any experience, or knows a good place to pick up supplies (especially in the Ann Arbor, MI area...), speak up!

Send me your addy again, ill send you a pound or two of my vermi babies. Theyre great fun in any weather, but they are a great way to be involved in soil during the winter. Weve had them for about 3 years now. bit of a learning curve, but its not rocket science. Laughing

That's fantastic!! but... is there any danger to them being "shipped", as it's sub-freezing in MI right now?

Also, what sort of container would work well? I've read that wood is best because it "breathes," but getting a Rubbermaid and drilling some holes would be easier in my mind.

I'll send you a message with my address in just a few seconds... need to finish watering all my trees Smile

thegardenforums.org has Kelly Slocum, a resident worm expert who has migrated from GW. the forum is great to read.

Mine have done best in a rubbermaid or cat litter bucket with holes drilled in. coffee, veggie scraps, bread, just be careful of flour in large quantities, it decomposes rapidly and gives of a lotta heat. shredded paper and cardboard is a bit better than paper toweling, finished or partly finished compost or leaf mold is great too. spoiled hay is OK, but doesnt break down fast.
