Hello Smile
I wanted to create a topic where users could post the recipes for citrus growing media that they are using or have heard of. I'm still experimenting, as I can't find CHC here and I'm unwilling to bareroot completely any of my citrus plants Smile...

Most of my plants grow in, with OK results:
1 part peat moss
1 part pine bark + some perlite.

Here's another recipe, given at a Portuguese citrus nursery website:
9 parts coarse peat (not sure exactly what that even is)
1 part sharp sand
(If I were able to detect coarse peat I would also add some perlite...)

I've also tried a readily made citrus, cactus, palm medium by "Schultz" (made in the USA), one of my Calamondins actually grows in it right now. I would buy it again, but unfortunately I wasn't able to find it in the store that I had bought it in previously. It consists of perlite, bark, peat moss. The package looks like this:

I'm thinking of repotting a newly acquired Meyer lemon into something like this:
1 part perlite;
1 part pine bark;
2 parts peat moss;
I'm also thinking of adding some sand (maybe 1 part). Is that a good thing in a citrus substrate?

I'm not afraid to use this much peat moss, because my plants are not put outside, so they won't get overwatered by rain. I also believe that I have my watering under control. I also repot my plants every single year, so the medium staying fresh as long as possible is not my main goal...

This would be great! i have two citrus that need to be potted up into larger containers, and one that probably needs to have the current media rinsed out and changed for something lighter(currently in half garden soil, half potting mix. bad i know, all i had at the time). Would love to hear the recommended mixs. By the way, what is CHC?

Thanks,
-Luke

The problem with mediums like the one offered by the Portuguese nursery in the above post with 9 parts coarse peat moss, is the pH. Peat moss can have a pH of 3, which is much too low for citrus. Ctrus trees growing in an ovely low (acidic) pH do not produce physical symptoms alerting the grower that there is a problem. What happens is that the fruit crop is greatly reduced.- Millet (540-)

I always add lava and/or pumice to my potting-soil. Citri love lava. Is lava hard to find in the US?

Robert, lava is very readily available in the US. I have used it in the past. What percentage of lava do you add to your medium? - Millet (539-)
