Murphy's Law says any thing that can go wrong will go wrong at the most inopportune moments. Thus.. I have done air layering Murphy style. LOL Laughing
Ok.. so I wasn't using "conventional" method or tools to begin with. but I had tape, plastic, knife, a peat pellet and a frightened but willing victim,, uhhh tree.. *POOR GEORGE*
I took some buds off of George to make a new graft. *will get pictures and share that later.*
I figured now would be a good time to try air layering. I gathered what I could find to "make due" and proceeded. I made a cut in to the branch and stuck a toothpick in the slice. I misted the area where I had taken buds for the graft and cut the slit for the tooth pick. I dusted rooting hormone on the area. then I took a peat pellet that I had soaked and cut a slit down one side. I opened the pellet and wrapped it around the area. I pulled the tape to tape the pellet back shut around the branch and then realized that was the end of the tape. I scrambled for tape but could only find scotch tape. ARGH.. ok I can work with this.. I took a sandwich bag and cut it to wrap the pellet.. Door bell.. Hurry back as quick as I can. fight with the plastic to wrap around well and tape down at same time. *UGH* what a mess...
well.. here is a photo.. Just don't laugh openly at the poor thing.. it's not it's fault I'm mean to it..

And here is the entire tree..

Not sure how long before I know if I have just killed the branch. but it was an interesting adventure. Wink

Hi we did some air grafting about 6 months go yesterday we had finally gotten to see some roots started ...

we went to a local Horticulture store they had tons of new things including these little air graft sponge thingys that can be reused over and over again .. Unless you have a root groing threw the sponge ..

Good luck and its about 6 months we have done all sorts of hard wood and are trying it with out lisbon lemon .. now i found this site im sure it will be a better way somewhere ..Tammy

Those are my T-buds when I ran out of grafting tape, I was forced to use plain rubber bands. most of them worked with T-buds about 95% take, I get close to 100% take with a parrafin type grafting tape. If you noticed, I make a lot of T-budding. One thing nice about T-budding is that you can orient buds in the directions you want and as many as you want, forming a much better distributed canopy coverage for the added cultivar. That's just my style.

You can learn a lot about budding and air layering from Joe Real. His educational web site is top notch. Ned Rahn and Stan McKenzie are also top notch with budding and grafting. Lastly Bonnie Childress is as good as it gets when it comes to budding and grafting. Us members can learn greatly from these and others on this forum. We should not be aftaid to ask them for help. - Millet

I am sad to say that it looks like the entire tree died.. Crying or Very sad
It's death has nothing to do with this experiment..
I would like to add for any one interested reading this post.. I used a syringe and blunt needle I got with my ink refill kit for my printer to water the pellet.. If given a couple more months it might have had a chance.. but I will never know now I guess.. I was so distraught about the plant dieing and the branch below the layering was turning black and on down the tree.. I didn't even stop to take a look under the peat to see if it had even tried to grow roots..
Anyway.. just thought I'd add that bit about how I watered it.. incase anyone wondered..
