My humble beginning of our sugar shack.
No I am not a mason, just determined. Now we will have a permanent place to make syrup. Now we are trying to figure out how to incorporate citrus into it.

Wow Hershell, looks great. What kind of tree do you tap? Here in Maine I tap some of my sugar maples each year. I assume you tap a different species in GA?

You can use wood to fire it but we use gas to cook cane juice and evaporate the water and cook out the impurities and what is left is syrup. It is a 60 gallon kettle and 60 gallons of juice yields about 6 gallons of syrup.

Hershell, I know a stone mason that is looking for the roller crusher thing. He has the kettle and would like to keep everything authentic. Are you crushing by hand ?

Have you ever seen any farm paintings by DeLoney ? My uncle had a syrup mill powered by a mule and loved fooling around with it. He had good help.... He saw a painting by DeLoney that had a portable cane syrup mill on a wagon. After being thoroughly questioned by my uncle, the artist admitted he had never seen a portable mill and just sorta made it up.....uncle was a little upset because he loved all the other paintings. Prints are readily available for most of his work..he is still alive but getting very old. His studio headquarters or office is in Dothan AL I think. He does excellent work. Tom
