It is very likely you are overlooking the insects responsible. One other possibility is that your tree was located under a tree that had some sort piercing, sucking insect feeding on it.

Ever been under a Crepe Myrtle tree on a hot summer day and felt that nice refreshing cooling mist?
Nice huh!

I almost had to cut down the tree when I told my wife that. _________________ Charles in Pensacola

My guess it was green fly can be black(aphids)a lot of the time transported by ants from plant to plant! The ants farm (milk)the aphids, could be that sticky substance youve seen.artie |

I don't really feel like making another thread post on my question since we're already talkin' bugs here.
Ok, so I did find out that my meyer tree has brown scale. I pretty much killed every one that I seen and I looked over my plant very carefully on both sides of the leaves and on the branches.
But is killing them enough? Or are their some that are so small and not visible that I won't notice them until they grow bigger in size? Should I still purchase Horticultural Oil? If so, would this brand be ok to use? http://www.treehelp.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=LG-6255 |

The horticultural oil that your link shows might be OK, however I don't know, because I have never heard of that brand name. The two brands that are mostly always used are: - 1. UltraFine and 2. Volk Oil. I always use UltraFine horticultural oil. Works with the very first spray. - Millet (767-) |

I am not familiar enough with all of the different brands to suggest a specific one, but I would guess that most of those listed will work. You might read the sellers description and see if it meets your needs.
I caution that oils must be applied within a certain temperature range. Normally this is around 40-90F, but make sure you follow the directions that come with the product.
