The Agave shown above is Agave Americana 'variegata". Millet

Bob, there are so many cool variegated agave out there. I would love to find some true variegated Truncata's and others, but I'm not willing to spend hundreds of dollars to put something in the ground. Anything could happen that could kill it & now we have armadillo's all over the place that like to dig stuff up... Fortunately I haven't seen any in my yard YET! Shocked

You're looking at the top of the rootstock. The bud is wrapped below if you look. Once the bud takes, then I break the rootstock a couple inches above the bud & bend it over until the bud starts to grow. Then remove the top of the rootstock.
