I have had a problem with snails this summer and am looking for a solution; I just read an article in the Sunset National Garden book that states “You can prevent snails from damaging such plants as citrus by wrapping copper bands around the tree trunks. Snails and slugs will not cross this barrier”
I have not heard of this and wondered if it really works. Another problem would be installing these copper bands without damaging the trunk as it grows.
Have you ever tried this with success? Are there any other options?

I have heard of this method and belong to an organic garden forum and most of the people who have tried this method it seems to work for them and all you have to do is make a copper ring around the base of the tree not actually on the trunk. Some people may have better advise because I haven't had to use this method yet.

Hi Karl, yes it does work. I use copper wire at base of tree & wrap it around trunk spiralling up a few times --not tight. Then, you can always loosen it. A collar is good too, but I'd put it closer to the trunk. I also put beer in a shallow pan. They crawl in & drown which is best - to KILL the buggers!
