I don't use the dead eyes either, except when holding the budstick. So I don't usually snip them off, am really lousy with the knife, and needed any length I can hold firmly on the budstick while taking the other "live" buds for insertion into their final T. |

Thanks again. |
Hey Ramon,
Feel free to visit me in Santee. If my citrus trees ever get back in shape after the freeze, you are more than welcome to a few cuttings.

Joe, I know you are good at the grafting using whatever technique you use to cut your buds, but you should try the little device I made to help with cutting buds-- it really helps make controlled cuts. They are easy to make-- you just need a small piece of wood and some drill bits. _________________ Skeet

Skeet, I have that in mind, and will try it out. Sometimes, the only available budwood that fall into my hand is one inch long stick, with only one bud. It has happened before and have ruined the bud, and it will happen again. So will try your approach with those one inch stick. |

I must have missed the explanation of what Skeet's wooden bud holder is.

Forgot to bookmark that one. It is a block of wood, heavy enough to stand on its own when you cut the buds, but light enough to lug around.
Drill different sizes of holes in the block, ranging from 1/8" to 1/2". Put the budsticks in the most fitted hole, then take out the bud. It serves as your third hand. Very nifty, thanks to Skeet! |

Hi Millet, I posted a picture of my jig in a thread "budwood cutting jig" on this forum-- that thread is now about 9 threads up from the bottom of the page.
It is just a small block of wood with several different size holes drilled into it. I just put the budstick in the hole and then I can use both hands to hold the razor blade when cutting the bud. It gives me a lot more control and removes any danger of getting cut. Actually, after I cut just past the bud, I let go with my right hand and take hold of the bud while I finish the cut with my left hand. By doing that I have a good grip on the bud--by the leaf stem if it is long enough-- and I am ready to put the bud directly in the prepared "T" slot in just seconds. I am left handed, so that may be backwards for some. _________________ Skeet
