My 2 Yuzu seedlings seem to have survived my couplea days gone just fine. I potted them up into hole-punched yogurt cups.
Ive finally decided to change tactics with the planting. I had them in fairly shallow clamshells, and had switched to mostly cocoapeat. Now, im back to sandy potting soil mixed with cocoa peat in slightly deeper containers. the cocoa alone just dries out like mad in shallow containers.
Im going to keep trying! I have seedling envy! those look great! |

Ok. well. ive got one Yuzu that is healthy and coming up second leaves, and I think a Quat coming up now. Also, several Nagami seeds that are gorgeous and plump are planted. ....
Went pot-shopping yesterday, so strange, i got the tall narrow terra cotta pots, and they were crazy cheap. they lower the prices on the off season? cool.
I think im going to spring for a bale of CHCs next paycheck. Ive got a new citrus friend- I was talking with the local Kroger security cop, I was looking at the kumquats, and we got to talking aboout citrus plants, and his isnt doing too well in its first winter. I told him to pick up a humidifier on the way home, and hes going to email me whenever he gets a day off. |

I'm jealous of your yuzu! I planted 10 of them about 4 weeks ago & none are up. In that same tray is ONE miracle fruit seed & that's not up either.
I will say that the clear plastic zippered blanket bag makes a excellent mini greenhouse!!
8 of 9 ponderosas are up (some 4 inches!),-- 6 0f 12 P. trifoliata, - 4 of 10 Meiwa's, - 1 of 3 centennial kumquats,- 2 0f 2 thomasville citrangequat are up but one just took a dive but I'm happy with all this. No persimmons or limequat yet.... All were planted Dec 6 so maybe I'll get more.
Recently planted Flying dragon & rangpur lime & they're in the blanket bag which is on a heating pad--- in 6 oz dixie cups.
I'd be REAL happy if the miracle fruit & a couple yuzu's would sprout.
I need some cheering up --we are having our 15th day in a row of no SUN... breaking a record today.
Also have 1 seedling (of 3 seeds) of an unknown that I picked up off the ground at expo. The only thing not labeled. I just can't remember what plant it came off of..laying on ground beneath the plant. The pod was 1 inch diameter, almost black with spikey bumps on it. They had 3 seeds in each. It's getting second set of leaves now so I'll post a pic later & maybe someone can help identify it.

I might have a 2nd yuzu that will make it. its clone doesnt have leaves, but its about to come upright and looks good.
I havent had the best luck with all this so far, but at least ive tried and learned. Just ordered some Calamondin seeds off E-Bay (i know, i know, but $5 worth a try)
I dont think any of the kaffir limes are going to make it either. I started about 10 really fresh plump nagami seeds from my second purchace of quats... $22 was the smallest flat of Meiwa I can order direct from florida, so I just might get me a baby tree when the weather warms up! (or, maybe I should get some self-control!) |

Hey Garnet, how did the meiwa seeds do that I sent you? 7 of 10 of mine came up (so far).
I hope you didn't order that $22.00 flat of meiwa seedlings! I think you should spend a few bucks more & buy a tree...you'll have plenty of seeds to plant from it.
Also, the yuzu seedlings you have...are they seeds I sent you?? I'm curious cuz none of mine came up yet.
Did you plant any Am. persimmons? Are they up yet? I'm still waiting on those to sprout too.
I'm happy that some flying dragon are sprouting now & I just planted them 11 days ago when I got them in mail from Ned - I just LOVE FD!! |

I think so! I feel so bad because you sent me neat stuff, but they dried out at least once, too much cocoapeat in my mix I think at least one of your Meiwa is going to make it.
I am always bad at labeling, and if I pull one that isnt doing well, I sometimes plant again in the same container
the 22.50 for a flat was for a box of meiwa fruits. I asked the seller how few I could buy I bought some calamondin off SeedMart, and they looked pretty good. A touch dry, I soaked them in just barely warm water, and they were nice and green inside. Ive got half doing the baggie method. (day 3 of baggies)
I know, live and learn, but it would have been nice to get all of them to live! |

6 of 10 Meiwas are up & I think that's about it on those. I planted 9 Ponderosa seeds and got 10 plants LOL. 8 P. Trifoliate seeds sprouted & I have 11 plants from them--3 'twins'. 8 Fly. Dragons are up - 1 of those is 'twins'. Later this year I could always ship a few - maybe a trade or for postage.
Still no yuzu's but I keep checking. |

I cant believe how awesome this one seedling is..... It came up with under-developed leaves, and I had left the "lid" on a bit too long and got almost-damping off looking at the top of its stub.
The stem and cotlyedons are still bright green, so I couldnt bring myself to pinch it off. Its about 3 weeks later now, and there are NEW LEAVES coming out of the top! this is my champion. I think this is my 3rd yuzu (one that should be a 'zu has pointy leaves?) then you get one Patty! (if you dont get any seedlings of your own and would like one!)
My first 'kwat seedling (lighter green, pointy leaved) is ailing a bit, dried out a touch, but im misting and covering sometimes to keep the humidity higher. looked a lot better last night.
Ive really enjoyed this experiment, learned a lot, (had a few lil disappointments) and now im getting the itch to start tomatoes and peppers. Ive only got one light shelf. |

Has any one tried a styrafoam egg incubator to germinate seeds? I use one I bought on E-Bay for I believe $30. It will keep temp. + or - .10 of a degree. Have had a 90% germination rate. If I remove seed coating, will sprout in 1--1 1/2 weeks. If coating is left on will sprout in 2--2 1/2 weeks. Wave tried it on Orange, Kumquat, lime, all sprouted about same time frame. |
