How do you go about grafting multi-varieties onto a rootstock to make a cocktail tree or a multi-variety tree like Joe real's 45 or 60 in one citrus tree?

Well I have JUST Started to graft for multi variety trees. Here is what I have learned:

Practice your budwood cutting.
Get FRESH budwood.
Practice you budwood cutting.
Selecting limbs lower on the tree seem to take longer to bud.
Did I mention practice budwood cutting?

Best I have right now is a Shasta Gold Mandarin (Below Graft Line), Fairchild Mandarin & Pearl Tangelo all grafted to a Sweet Lemon Rootstock.

There are some compatibility issues out there but I can't really say what they are as I don't know.

Thanks,

The best rootstock to use will have multi branches. If you plan ahead you can prune to force the rootstock to branch out.

Heres a pic of the tree I made from Benny's Clemnule buds he sent me. Rootstock had three nice branches. I grafted a Clemnule to all three. I should have grafted another variety to the center branch for a polinizer...

Heres another I just budded up.

I will definitely have a say on this, but am pressed for time right now. Will come back later.

My multi-grafted trees and the crazy reasons behind why I do multi-graft have been featured in the front cover of the new MAKE magazine. Will soon post the contents here after I receive a copy from the editor himself. Robert Luhn dropped by our house and interviewed me and he also looked closely at my multigrafted trees of all kinds and decided to write an article about it. Robert Lun is one of the editors of O'Reilly media and it was an honor of him to drop by. I treated him with a glass of Flavor Queen (Pluot) wine.

Ohh, I have so many paper work and programming to catch up at the moment. Payback time for the vacation that I took!

ok then the purpose of making it branch out is so that there aren't as many grafts on the main trunk, because that is what i thought you would do. You make multi grafts on the main trunk and then the main branches would be different varieties.

Depending on how big your tree is, you should be able to graft on the branches. I had a tiny 2 foot plant and the only thing big enough to graft with my skillset was the main trunk. worked out well, as all three grafts took at the same time.
