I live in bear country hear in western NC and have lost several apple and peach trees to bears tearing trees down to get fruit. I put an electric fence up around orchard and it seams to work, but want to extend some citrus plantings out past the current fence. Has anyone had trouble with bears attacking citrus/ trifoliate hybrids/ poncyrus?

Any bear that tries to attack a poncirus is gonna end up full of holes. I've read stories of the thorns on those puncturing tractor tires.

a colleague of mine has bear problem every spring, They visit his orchard and eat apples and plums. He can not harm them, because they are legally protected and i would harm him, if he harms them.

I live in an area black bears call home. They come right down into the city and can be quite a problem. Last year we had many weeks with sightings 3 to 5 times a week on our street alone.
One day last August at around 8 pm, i was watering my Meyer lemon which is located in my front garden - my wife and i were standing side by side when we heard this crazy scratching sound coming from either the gate at the side of my house or my neighbours - immediately we dropped everything and ran to the front porch for cover. Well this bear had climbed over a 6' (2m) cedar fence which was no more that 10' away. We scrambled to find a camera - it was like a scene from the 1988 movie the Great outdoors :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBJ-MpPBDug

Anyway, the story here is, that although the bear wiped out ALL my figs and stomped the tree, it didn't attack my lemon tree. (and it was loaded with fruit at the time) It was a good thing the bear didn't mess with it ! Laughing Mind you, there are no other citrus trees around so perhaps he/she hasn't acquired a taste for them - yet .
