It has more security features and supposedly faster overall than version 2. It is unfair to compare FireFox 3 with Internet Explorer, as the latest IE cannot even catch up with FireFox 2.

I'm not sure if version 3 is automatically an update to version 2. From version 1 to version 2, I needed a separate intentional download. This allows minor updates to version 1 while version 2 is being distributed. It would be probably the same with version 3. There is still some support for version 2, which will be accessible via the updates tool, but not for updating from 2 to 3. Some systems should have a fallback to version 2 as plan B.

To be counted as legible download count, it must be human initiated. Auto updates don't count.
