Hi Guys,
I want to thank you for your help so far. I'm a relative newbie to gardening in general, but I've fallen in love with citrus and planted 7 into terra cotta pots last month. I lurk here a lot looking for all the ways to keep them alive so I have juicy fruit next year, and hopefully I'll be able to someday give back some of the expertise others here have offered so freely.

Anyway, some of you will know I've already stated my preference for a more "organic" fertilizing program, which is harder with pots than in ground. When I potted them all last month, I mixed in the EB Stone citrus fertilizer into the potting mix, but I know I need to switch to a regular, weak dilution of something liquid on an ongoing basis. I've heard the term "Weakly, Weekly."

So, I've found two "organic" products and I'd like to hear your thoughts about them.

The Neptune's Harvest Fish/Seaweed hydrolysate combo is the first option.

The second option is the Dr. Earth Liquid Formula Fertilizer, (OMRI certified) with balanced 3-3-3 ratios and chelated minerals, shown here:

I don't have the package in front of me but it's chelated, has some mined stuff in there, and some organic blood or bone meal. And I like the fact that it's liquid and from an organic company I trust. But it's only 3-3-3, which I do know may not be enough N for citrus.

And just to be clear, when I say "organic" I don't necessarily mean I want to grow in dense organic material and recreate the grown-in-ground microbiological situation... I just don't want to spray my food with a bunch of synthetic chemicals from a big marketing engine like Scotts/Miracle Grow. I am actually using a really fast draining soilless mix made up of perlite, bark fines, and some peat based commercial mix.

So, if you were going to go "organic"... ould you choose one over the other, or both simultaneously, alternate them both?

Now I just need to figure out which (or both) to buy and get them in the plant soon. My meyer is starting to show some signs of nitrogen deficiency (yellowing on the older leaves) which makes sense because it's been blooming and growing like crazy last month and sucking up water almost daily.

THANKS in advance for the help.

I have never used a organic. You would be much better off using something like Osmocote (with minors) or Vigoro. Organics will leech out of the soil very quickly...

I guess just go eeenie meenie minee mo and use whatever. I really do not think highly of either one, as far as being beneficial nutrition for citrus. Chemically speaking, what nutrient chemical the tree's roots eventually absorb and will become part of your tree and fruit, will be exactly the same chemical whether you use organic or synthetic. The soil Micro-organism will just change the organic forms of NPK that you use over to the chemical forms of NPK and only then will the tree will absorb them. Besides, Dr. Earth has chemicals added in the form of EDTA as the cleating agent for the trace minerals. When useing organics it probably really does not matter what brand you choose, they are all about the same. Good luck with your tree. -Citrus is a good hobby to enjoy. Millet
