I would not place too much reliance on any of these reports, regardless of the conclusion.  Everyone has a bias and can make assumptions that skew the results.  Wikipedia discusses the controvery from both sides.

I was discussing this with Joe a while back and, if I understood him correctly, he was including solar energ required to produce the corn.  Unless someone is using that solar energy to otherwise manufacture a form of energy that can be captured, it is lost anyways.  It does seem that more scientists claim there is a net energy gain in corn being converted to ethanol.  It does seem, however, that sugarcane and switchgrass may be better alternatives.
