During an information day on 16 February, Spain's leading fresh produce co-operative grower group Anecoop presented to its members the new citrus fruit varieties available for cultivation, whose goal is to cover all commercial gaps and improve marketing of citrus fruits across Europe. More than hundred of growers and technicians from its 99 cooperatives participated in the workshop.
The new "Clemensoon (pictured) is the main early variety of tangerine that is known today. Anecoop plans to start with 200.000 units, to then reach a million trees in two or three years.
Furthermore, two new seedless varieties of mandarins were presented, Safor and Garbí. Safor would be available on the market in February and March, while Garbí would be supplied later, at end-March through April.
Thanks to these new varieties Anecoop could expand its citrus fruits season and be present on the market from September till April instead of 3 months as usual.
All citrus fruit varieties have being studied and tested in cooperation with the Valencian Institute of Agrarian Research (IVIA).
