Last week I was at a nursery in Illinois and a worker there was telling me how hard it was to get citrus plants. She said there weren't any plants coming from Florida, and then they opened up sales for two weeks, and then closed it again.
I didn't see anything about this in the citrus news forum (I might have missed it there, though), did anyone else hear about sales from FL being allowed?

I don't think so. That would be big news here, and I haven't heard a word.

Florida citrus trees have been banned from interstate shipment by the USDA for about a year due to Canker, and Greening disease within the state of Florida. - Millet

That's what I thought and that's what the nursery lady said but she said the canker fruit tree ban was lifted for 2 weeks but then they put it back in place.

I pulled up the state website just to check. There is not likely to be any change anytime soon on the subject of citrus plants or plant parts. They did modify the rules on fruit last fall to permit shipment to non citrus states without grove inspections, but USDA has said that canker cannot be eradicated in Florida, so this ban is permanent--unless (and let's hope this never happens) the other citrus states get infected.

Here is the site: http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/pi/canker/pdf/cankerflorida.pdf

I don't think the nursery lady knows what she was talking about, or she just made up a story. The trees probably were shipped from California or Texas. I seriously doubt that the USDA would lift the ban for two weeks and then reinstate the ban so she could obtain her trees. - Millet

That isn't how it was. She said they had a hard time getting citrus due to the ban, which had been lifted, but it only was lifted two weeks and then went back in place. She said they get their citrus from California, which makes it more expensive. They had Monrovia Bearrs limes in a 2 gal pot for $20.
Also, a Page Mandarin that was there the first time I stopped and not the second time, boo hoo, and a large Eureka lemon with an enormous lemon on the tree.
It was surprising to see fruit trees for sale in Illinois. I weakened and bought one of the limes, it has a very odd looking graft that I'll have to take a photo of.

Citrus plants in Florida are now much more expensive than they used to be. Two years ago I ordered 2 trees from Briteleaf at $15 each--they are now $30 each (these are trees in 4"x4" long containers). Primarialy due to the recent requirement that all citrus plants grow or shipped anywhere in Florida must be grown and maintained inside a screen house to prevent infection by the citrus psyllid that carries the greening disease. In addition, demand is high due to the number of trees cut down in the canker war, both commercial and residential. I was going to order a couple new varieties, but niether of the ones I wanted were in stock.
