Dear Citroholics,
may be it is interesting to see that far away at our cool corner something is happening regarding citrus breeding. Today there was a small article about Bernhard Voß the owner of the citrus nursury Agrumi near Hamburg (may be a little bit comparable to Stan McKenzie). The article itselfe gave some description about his doing and also about his new Breeding named Violetta.
It is a crossing between c. ichangensis X c. limon
To give you some impression see the picture below
Taste should be absolute similar to normal Lemon, with short growing periode and much more frost hardiness than Lemon. The blossoms are deep violet, the fruit itself is also deep violet before ripening (they are not painted !!!).
For those who are interested in the article please follow this link
Saures aus dem Alten Land
It is in German, but if you use the language tool of google you can read it in english.
Alternative find the article as PDF file here (only in german- approx 900 kb)

Best regards

Below please find in addition to the fruit photos a picture of the blossoms (also amazing violet/purple)
I will try to get seeds (Bernhard said that the seeds fall true) for interested Citroholics.

Andy, Thank you for taking the time to post the pic of this amazing citrus. Im sure that there are several like myself that would like seeds. My I suggest that if you can send some seeds then send them all to Laaz. That would be easier and cheaper you.
That way it would be established here and would trickle down the rest of the Citroholics here.

Terry is right. Maybe Andy could send seeds to Laaz (Laaz send him some monies?), & then we could send Laaz something to cover costs Of shipping to us. Or, anyone else who has the time, & responsible enough to handle it. _________________ Patty

let me open this discussion again and let the breeder talk a bit about his beauty
here are some comparable fruits, violetta is not orange, but tinted violett, even the ripe fruit:
Violetta seems to be a cross of ichangensis and medica - after opening a fruit, I could notice a hard shell like medica fruits have.
The fruit is often very seedy, but the smell and taste of the juice is absolutely like lemon.
Unfortunately was my motherplant (the original seedling)
killed by frost last winter. So it is only hardy till - 8°C I think.
There is a sister of Violetta, I call it Hybrid Nr.3 - is is nearly identical to violetta, except the not so much violet tinted flowers
and fruits
The fruit is a bit less seedy.
Hybrid Nr. 3 is a bit harder as Violetta, surviving the winter as violetta died, it is hardy till -10° - -12° I think.
At the moment I have availible 2 one year old seedlings of violetta and some seeds of Hybrid Nr. 3 |

Good job bernhard. Nice looking plant and fruit. Would like to eventually try it living in a 8a zone (15-10F). Good luck. |
