We're experiencing an unusual hard winter time here right now, with quite a bit of snow. This is my in-ground citrumelo tree with a heave snow cover...

The freeze has clearly damaged the young growth...

Dark marks on the leaves around the drops. Those drops are actually ice. Are those dark marks damage inside the leaves?

I removed most of the snow from the tree. More snow will be coming in the next days. I hope my tree will make it through the winter. And this is only just the beginning...

Wow, I wish all citrus were this hardy. I don't know if the dark marks are damage but I hope your tree survives ok through winter. What type of citrumelo is it? What do the fruits taste like?

I don't know the type, I bought it from Flora Toscana in Germany, but they do not specifiy a specific type...

Never had any flowers nor fruits on it. I'm also curious to taste it. Maybe next year? Wink

I think the lowest we had in the past few weeks was about -10°C...

According to http://www.sepalms.org/Publications/Hardy%20Citrus%20sample.pdf, citrumelos are hardy to about 5°F or -15°C...

My citrumelo got -16C last winter , no damage at all, although it is much larger than yours. I believe that at this size you have to protect it for few winters in order to establish a regular rhythm of the growth.

Last winter I thought that, at -8C, my 'hardy' citrus had been tested as much as they ever could be. Some citranges had considerable damage, and the Ichangensis was cut right back to the main stem. All have slowly recovered.
But now I fear for them again. We had -12C (10F) a couple of nights ago. That is certainly the lowest temperature I've ever known here near London, and I've been around for quite a long time! Such temperatures and continuous snow cover before Christmas are unique.

Sorry to hear about the challenges to your plants... We've been having a rather crazy winter over here in the US as well.

It's been mild here in New Mexico, as expected since it is a La Nina pattern, but the cold in the Eastern part of the country, even south into citrusland, and the epic snowfall over the Sierra Nevada (up to 15 feet from the last system alone) and the Rocky Mountains (around 8 feet in places) is newsworthy.

My concerns about the weather are perhaps a bit different, since I have no citrus in the ground yet. I'm in zone 6, so there will be plenty of challanges to this endeavor!

Good luck over there!

It's still very cold here but for now the citrumelo still looks OK.

Happy holidays!
