Hi neighbor!

yep, you can t-bud in fall as well. The temperature should be below 90 for t-bud to be success.

Actually, I tried t-bud in last June out of my curiosity and it worked. The trick was that I kept pots with rootstock inside under AC for a few days before budding and than until I removed the wrap. another plant that was outside all the time grew weak.

Good luck!

You can bud any time the bark is slipping.

You can sept 15 - oct 15 or until a cold front comes thru. I've never had any luck in the heat of the summer.

Phil,

why is it so? When I tried it last summer, bark was slipping very well, rootstock was vigorous, bud took fine but the scion was growing slowly, was weak and finally froze (!) in the winter. Surprised Well, roots were "wrong" anyway... Of course it could be just my lack of experience but I mostly blame the heat for failure and not going to try t-budding in summer again.

I'm just curious, what is it that makes t-bud unsuccessful when the temperature is too high?

Thank you!

You don't want to bud trees while they are pushing, the next problem is the bud wood. Typicaly there are two major pushes in growing cycle, the bud wood needs to "harden off" before being buded so you have to time the two correctly for your best take. That can vary depending on wher you live from april-June then again in sept- oct15. In my expieriance my biggest problem with budding in the summer is, drying around the bud either from leaving the tape on to long burning it, or just sun burn not sure. Good luck. Its time to start. I started breaking my trees I budded in sept. Last week, and will probably re bud may -may 15 on what didn't take in the fall

I have no problems budding all summer long. The rootstock is grown in containers & is put in the shade after budding. I never leave them in the sun until the buds push out & the tape is removed.

Oh, that was the problem! My rootstock was in ground and receiving full sun! Shocked I did not think about making a little shade for it.
Thank you, Laaz!

Laaz,

Do you use Parafilm?

Is it necessary to remove it after the bud pushes through or will it degrade and come off?

NOTE Before someone brings it up since I'm in Florida, I am grafting Loquats not citrus.

Yes, the only thing I use is Parafilm. You could leave it on, but I remove it (Many times long before the bud pushes).
