I wanted to share some recent pictures of my new backyard citrus grove. These young trees are all from either McKenzie Farms or Woodlanders.

These were all planted in the ground this April and with few exceptions have been growing very well.

Great start. Give them a few years and you will have a jungle.

I bought my first citrus (a few satsumas) from Stan McKenzie back in late 2007. Most of these went into large pots on the patio where they continue to grow and bear nicely. Last summer the local power company exercised their option to clear the vegetation out from under their lines in the backyard - all native trees like oaks, gum and magnolias. That opened up a 100-foot strip along the back of my property. It wasn't long until I bought a dozen new citrus trees to fill the gap! In addition to the promise of great fruit, these citrus should remain short enough to not interfere with the power lines ~25 feet up.

I plan to really baby these new trees with frost-cloth and lights during the winter. I'm also planting a few of the more cold-hardy bananas back there; two varieties (Veinte Cohol and Dwarf Orinoco) supposedly have the ability to bear edible fruit even in our relatively short 240-250 day growing season.

Are you concerned that this could happen to your citrus sometime down the line?

Nice selection BTW ... I have several of the same and look forward to seeing your progess.
Cheers, Barrie.

As long as I keep them all short enough (the poncirus trifoliate rootstock will help!) there shouldn't be any problems with violating their utility easement. The power company provided a suggestion list of plants to go under utility lines; although no citrus were on the list it looks like they're giving me a good 10 feet to play with vertically. That should work well.
