Chops- I know what you mean. I always enjoy leaving for work & pulling off a few figs for the ride. Vinny _________________ www.bigapplebonsai.com |

Thanks Vinny (and Chops), I will go out and get some granulated lime and do the same thing. By the way, I used to live in Yonkers quite a few years ago.

I use pelletized lime - only becuase I found a bag partially opened in park across street LOL. I only scratch in about 1/2 - 1 inch on top into the soil surface in Spring. I don't fert anything at end of summer - esp. for plants that go dormant.
Chops, my mouth is watering for a taste of your fig! _________________ Patty

Yay, my Atreano fig came last week and was not bear root as advertised and I'm very glad about that cause I didn't need to do anything extra. It is a 26 inch tall stick and right now it is getting nubs and a fat tip and tiny new shoots from the old base. I'm looking forward to watching it grow and learning all about figs. The bad thing is that I already want another one. |

Theresa, I have a extra Brown Turkey and/or Italian Golden Honey cuttings that are rooting nicely. You can have one of those if you want. I'm sure they will be ready to pot up in another month or so. You may even get figgies this year!
I put all my plants outside 2 days ago while the temps got up to mid 40's at night & it is overcast. Good time to set plants out so they don't get burnt from direct sun.
I don't care how cold it gets -- THEY ARE NOT COMING BACK IN! ...well, not till fall anyway.
STILL cloudy & drizzely. Can't wait for warm sunny weather...& FIGS. _________________ Patty

Patty, I would absolutely love one of them. When it's time to prune my Atreano fig, you can certainly have some cuttings if you like. Maybe you can even show me how to prune it. I don't feel too confident pruning stuff yet. I think having figs will fix that though. The only large thing that I've ever pruned is my ficus benjamina and I was nervous doing that.
In the mean time I will research pruning a bit and study my tree and see if I feel a little more comfortable. Confidence comes with practice.
I have been moving my fig in and out of the house, but will leave it out now unless there is a threat of frost. Mine is very small and light so I can easily pick up with one hand and move it.
Thank you for your kind and generous offer; I will certainly take you up on it.

Hey, thanks Joan. I've been gone all wkend... thought I'd check my mail from my fiance's house. You know, I have total of 4 cuttings rooting now & one is for you Joan. Last fall (or summer?), you mentioned you'd like to try growing figs. I'll let you & Theresa know when they're ready.
Can you believe how cold this Spring is?????!!!
The cuttings are BT & Golden It. honey -- take your pick.
Theresa, I wouldn't prune your fig tree -- unless it is big & out of hand. I never pruned any of mine.
Last couple weeks I trapped 2 raccoons & 15 squirrels in my yard!!!
I may have a possum around, but will trap more squirrels for sure. This year they won't eat my figgies - hopefully! They just took the last 8 meyer lemons since plants are outside. I picked ONE. I declared war & borrowed a trap.
Chops, those figs are HUGE!! Thanks for sharing the pic. _________________ Patty

Patty- that's a lot of critters! Good luck trapping the squirrels and reducing their population. My father bought a trap a few years ago and started catching them. He lost count at 40. They just keep on coming.
They seem to like digging in my garden to either find nuts or bury them and of course they love the bird feeders. Other than that I've been pretty lucky. _________________ I am amazed when anything grows in my yard! |

Bird feeder??!! I call them squirrel feeders!
They dig up soil in my pots for same reason Chops. And, it's always the citrus.

I wanted to write something after the pictures but it wouldn't let me. Basically, the plant is in an 'S' shape and I'm trying to straighten it out. I guess I should take the stick out and see how it does on its own and I probably should put it into a larger pot, too. And giving it some granulated lime would be nice also. Looks like there's lots to do. Can't wait till the fig gets a growth spurt, it's kinda growing slow. |

Patty, I would still love one of those figs if you still are willing to part with one. I haven't had lots of time to be online but check in as I can. This is a great place to gain knowledge. It has been sooooo cool here this Spring I wonder if we will ever get summer!!! _________________
