When Citrus Joe and I toured the Variety Collection, our guide had a three ring binder that listed every tree in the collection, and ithe tree's location. Therefore, he was able to take us to any tree that we wanted to see. However, there was only two of us on the tour, so it was easier for our guide to provide such personal service. - Millet (1,445) |

You guys were superstars. With the class, think 20 citrus enthusiasts running willy nilly grabbing fruit, tasting, etc etc etc. It is actually a lot of fun _________________ citrusboy aka marc

might take a sharpie marker to write names of fruit on the fruit for later reference.. and then you know what seeds you planted if you want to plant seeds from fruit you have collected..

Gina, from what I'm reading writing down the names would not be possible. In the variety collection, the tree are not labeled, and eveidently the host does not take the location book with him during the public tour. Therefore, the attendees have no idea which tree is which. - Millet |

The folks from UCR know the basics, like robertson navel, all the blood oranges, etc etc etc. It is when you start asking for Citrus Hanayu or Microcitrus warburgiana type stuff that you get this, "I wish you would have told me about this in day 1 so I could tell you where that tree is", look.
The marker is an excellent idea Gina, as my bag of warren limequats fell over and mixed with my bag of lakeland and now the seeds that I am growing could be either. _________________ citrusboy aka marc

Thanks for all the info guys. I am most interested in the Valentine Hybrid, 88-2 and 88-3 mandarins and of course tasting all the patented California mandarins. Citrusboy, Did they take you to these or did you have to specifically request to see these?

When I was on tour at UCR I ask for Valentine Hybrid, 88-2 and 88-3 budwood, and was told no because they have not yet been released. I do not know if they will give any fruit from the Valentine treea, or not, but I really was not all that interested in seeds, as it takes too many years to grow a mature tree. - Millet (1,444-) |

I would love some seeds, at 26 years of age I may have some fruit when I am 40. I sent you a private message with my address.
Thanks again,

That is a shame they do not have them marked..
I like to carry a sharpie with me at all times for marking stuff.. comes in handy with 3 kids.. they have some that have fine tip on one side and regular on the other.. those are best.... but the regular works best with fruit..
