We picked our first peaches off our very young Saturn Peach tree yesterday. WOW. They were so sweet! Very low fiber. very juicy.
Yum! I hope they'll stay that good in years to come.

The reason why they are so sweet even if they have the same sugar content as other ordinary peaches is because they are low acid.

They are also highly productive and low chill. They are one of the most recommended backyard peaches.

And they are really hard to find from the grocery stores.

Thanks for the additional info Joe,
So that is why they're so sweet- no acid! Makes sense, they taste almost syrupy.

And yes, it was quite productive. Ours is just a little stick with 2 small (less than 1 ft) branches. When it got fruit I thought it would be too much for the tree, but we got about 6 small fruit.

We see them here at our Walmart (yeah, I know, but it's the only affordable food store here) and if I remember correctly they're $1.50 ea!

Sounds yummy. Would they grow up here??? Come to think of it, I don't think I ever saw a peach tree here. Susan, you'll have to bring one on your next trip here - & then we can do Brady Street! Laughing

OK! I'll bring some if you send some of your rain down here! Laughing
My parents had a peach tree out in New Berlin, I think most varieties are OK to zone 5. Might be wrong about that, though!

Are you still dry in TN? My wife was up there most of last summer and said that it was really dry. We have been getting about what we need here for the last month or so.

Oh, it's just TERRIBLE! You shouldn't get me going on this subject, I'll whine for hours! LOL We did get a wopping 1/2 inch this week but it didn't help much. A lot of our pine trees are dying and redbuds are wilting. I don't think I've ever seen 12 ft trees droop before!
It's as bad as it was last summer and very disheartening. We had a drought the last 2 years we were in Wisconsin and I think it followed us to TN!

All the brown soil you see here would normally be covered by water- right up to the tree line. Those tree stumps are up to 5 ft in diameter.
I have my citrus pots where they only get a few hours of direct sun, they would burn up if they were in the sun all day. I even had to move my bananas out of the sun, since in addition to the drought it has been in the low 90s here but the humidity makes it worse.
(see, don't get me started! hee hee)

Is that the picture? I see a house and a rainbow, but no soil.

I know how disheartening drought can be, especially when excess rain is so close. The summer of 2000 and then again in 2001 we had a really bad drought that killed mature pine trees. I will be wishing for rain for you!

Sorry about that, grabbed the wrong photo.
Thanks Skeeter, for your thoughts.
Here's another photo (I'll take them down in a bit since they aren't citrus) of the bridge down the road from us. I-40 from Knoxville to Asheville, NC

This is last year, and we hope it won't get as bad this year.
