Hey guys, I was invited to do a TV show on citrus this week. The show is called " Downhome with Tony and Amanda" and it aired on the South Carolina Channel on Tuesday nite. Any of you who have DSL connection and a windows player can access the show. Just type in a search engine for: www.mig.org and then click on the "streaming video " bar to the left of the home page. Then click on the Downhome with Tony and Amanda show for Jan. 10th. It should load and play if Im correct. Id like to hear from some of you who get the chance to see it. Im always out there pluggin citrus _________________ Y ORANGE U Growin Citrus

Loved it!!! I was not interested in finger limes before. That plant was very interesting!! My kids loved the root stock bit.. my oldest wants to grow one of those just cause the thorns look so cool!! LOL I'm going to try to grow one of the ones I have from seed right now in the back yard. looks like a great deterrent for the person that keeps getting in our back yard stealing stuff and peeping Tom on my girls. Planted in the right spot I'd not have to worry about them again. over the fence and right in to FD tree.. he'd think twice about jumping the fence again. Those thorns were huge!!!
Anyway.. great job!!!!
I'll probably be buggin ya for a finger lime and a Satsuma in a couple of months when tax return gets in..

RATS, My player is there but it won't play...guess I need DSL like you said. I'd love to see this video.
I bought a finger lime from you Stan at expo (Gina mentioned it).
Would love to see those FD's too. Like one of the speakers at expo said (oops, forgot his name), someone planted them along side yard to keep neighbors dogs and anything else out out of the yard LOL.
Can anyone think of a way to watch this video w/out DSL? Thanks
So proud of you Stan....I already got your autograph on my dinner menu, remember? LOL

Stan,
That was thoroughly enjoyable, I bet you had fun doing it too. I notice the hosts are from the Clemson Extension Service. Although they try to sound humorously unknowing, I bet they are some very knowledgable folks.
Does Clemson have a Master Gardener program for the folks in SC? This is something I think most of our friends would be interested in as there is usually such a program in most agricultural states.
I have just been accepted into the Alabama Cooperative Extension's Master Gardener program here in South Alabama and couldn't be more thrilled. It is run by the brilliant Ag. folks at Auburn and runs for about three months, one day a week. It's not expensive and to finish the program and get certified as a "Master Gardener" you have to do 40 hours of service to your community. You also have to do a certain amount of work each year to retain it.
They usually only do it once a year so there is often a waiting list of people to get in, so I was very honored to be accepted.

Ned, I will try and make sure that next year,Santa brings you an apron just like the one I had on.. only yours will read: Ned the CitrusHEAD! I did a lecture on citrus the next day after the TV show to a Garden Club in Florence, SC and one of the ladies in the group said to me: "I do love to see a man in an apron" I told her that this one was for demonstrative purposes only!
Patty, Sorry you couldnt see the program. I thought it turned out pretty well and maybe, just maybe, it will cause someone out there to become a citruholic just like we are
Casa, The Clemson Extension service is very involved in the Master Gardener program and I know that the Florence County Clemson Extension puts on a class yearly and they even do two sessions.. one in the morning for retired folks or folks who work evenings and then an evening program for 9-5 folks. Ive been invited for the last 4 years to do an entire session on citrus and grafting and now Im beginning to hear progress reports from some of the students that I talked to about citrus. Many of them have bought satsumas and other citrus to plant in their own backyards.
Babyblue, Glad you and the kids enjoyed the show, I had a fun time doing it and if the kids need some trifoliate seed to start their little thorny project, I have some for free if you will contact me.
One last thing, The DVD Disc videos of the Expo are available if anyone is interested. The guy who did them is a professional TV ad maker and he tells me they are quite good. Both speakers are on the disc along with the ?and answer session. You can contact him at: csydeprime@yahoo.com _________________ Y ORANGE U Growin Citrus

That reminded me of a morning TV show here that I was called to do on a couple of occcations. The format was different but I got to talk about cold hardy palms, bananas and so on. It was interesting and I got to see the innner workings in the studio.
If any of you get a chance to so a show, don't hesitate. It's fun and a great experience.
Cheers, Barrie. |

Stan, you were great! I sent Roland Allston an email suggesting a show featuring you just before the Expo, but maybe they already had the idea, too. I envy your ability to speak in public and on camera and appear so calm and knowing. It would take lots of "medication" for me to do that, even if I had the knowledge.
Do you think it will air on the regular analog PBS station in the future? My cable company doesn't carry the SC channel yet.
Congratulations on a super job.

Joe, Thanks for trying to get me on the "Making It Grow" TV show. I understand that this is (THE) longest running TV show of any that has ever appeared on Public Television. I think this show airs in lots of other states outside SC. A few years back, Roland Alston contacted me about doing a show for "Making it Grow" and we had everything set up. It was supposed to be filmed in the fall so that the we could visit some local citrus growers and actually show the ripe fruit hanging on the trees. Just a day or so before the show was to be taped, Mr Alston called me and told me his mother in law had died and he was going to have to cancel. He told me he would get back with me but never did. Ive had lots of people who watch the show ( I dont) say that many callers over the years have called in asking about citrus. His pat answer is that it wont grow here! I finally watched "MIG" last Tuesday nite as it precedes the "Tony and Amanda" show. I was pleasantly surprised when two (2!) callers called in on the question and answer segment and asked about citrus! The callers had no way of knowing that the following show would be all about citrus so Mr Alston finally had to tell the second caller that the following show would be a show featuring citrus expert Mr McKenzie and that their questions would probably be addressed on that show! Its always real SWEET when somebody who knows it all has to come around to your way of thinking! _________________ Y ORANGE U Growin Citrus

Wonderful show! Thanks for the heads-up!
I found the 'script' (if that is the term) very informative. I was unaware that poncirus trifoliata went dormant and looked like a dead bramble bush during winter. |

Through the magic of the internet, even watched it here in England!
First time I've ever seen a Fingerlime plant shown on TV - even if it was a bit too small to fruit!
A star performance, Stan, and I bet your order book will fill up fast! |
