If Okinawans pick citrus while they are still green, than evidently no one told the people in ilyaC's video that. - Millet

Hello!

The botanical garden of my town, Mainz (Germany), has a citrus tachibana shrub.

It would be very nice if you could show us the photos of this plant. And its hardy still needs to be checked in 7B or 8A zone.

As you see the plant has very yellow leaves. They are only a bit greener in summer. They probably don't feed the plant well. As you see it has also only a few leaves. This is not much better in summer. The flowers, however, are abundant and are already coming as you see.
The fruits are very small, only about 1,5cm in diameter. According to the internet, they can be bigger.

That you two saw no citrus tree in the Ryukyu Islands can mean two things: Either the description of the native region from the internet is wrong, or the tree is hardier than any other citrus tree there but is extremly rare on the islands. It would be good we could again check the islands. But since you are both citrus freaks I tend to believe that the plant has disappeared from the islands or was never there. Both amounts to roughtly the same: Its not hardy enough.

It's fairly trivial to discover that Okinawa does have citrus trees.

Tanaka keeps mentioning the tachibana as being found in Okinawa.

Thank you for the links. Interesting! Only one remark: Stricly speaking the last link lokates not C. tachibana in Okinawa but C. kerij and others. But still Citrus tree.
