Is anyone familiar with Jiouyuezao Mandarin? It's supposed to be be about 3 degree's cold hardier than changsha. Any observations on quality , ripening time or a purchase source? Thanks in advance . Gene

Never heard of it, but then again Changsha is not very good if you ask me.

It may have something to contribute to the gene pool for hybridizers as far as cold hardiness and early ripening. I have several changsha seedlings I 've grown out. One is small and acid , most are tasteless but I wouldn't pass the tree without grabbing a few of some of a couple of the others if they were cold hardy enough to grow here in my yard. Thanks Gene

In searching for it there's a reference to it being called "September Early", but I really couldn't find much of anything. Here's about all that came up...

"Jiouyuezao (September Early) is a chance seedling of the Citrus reticulata cv. Bendizao obtained in 1960."

The Bendizao itself is supposed to be a few degrees hardier than Changsha and is supposed to be of good quality. Not sure if it's available in the US.

Jiouyuezao is considered hardy to 9F (depending to the weather conditions preceding the freeze event). Millet

Thanks Greg and Millet. Sounds just like what we need cold hardy, good quality and early ripening. Perhaps some of our European members are familiar with these mandarin selections, that is , if they're not avalable in the US.

Just checked "Citrus directory ver. 2.0", pdf at sra.inra.
No Jiouyuezao Mandarin there.

http://www.fao.org/docrep/003/x6732e/x6732e12.htm
"
Ine China, the mandarin variety Jiouyuezao (C. reticulata) is described in the Jiangxi Province as very hardy germplasm, the tree surviving temperatures as low as -13.4°C, while the mandarins "Tuanianiju" and "Bendizao" and the Satsuma "Xingjin" in Hunan Province are considered hardy because did not suffer damages at -12.1 C°
"

I see text as above (from FAO document) cited under several European languages, but found no info about anyone growing that.

As it was said, it is seedling selection of Bendizao mandarin.
Bendizao mandarin 本地早蜜橘 (Citrus succosa).

Bendizao mandarin is very popular in China.
