Since I finally posted in some topics today, I should introduce myself as well.

I'm new to citrus cultivation as a hobby, but not gardening in general. I plan to stick with in-ground growing (with cold-protection) as much as possible. I live in metro Atlanta, Ga with a those hot, humid southeastern summers. I know we have warm micro-climates because very occasional lasting snowfall that can surround our area melts away quickly (or won't even stick) in the city. I have no greenhouse, only sunny rooms where I put my one little old lime during cold-spells (lost the tag).

I've dreamt about mikan since I tasted them years ago but only last fall bought an Owari from Stan. I plan to buy a few more types when he has them available. I also got a yuzu since they seem interesting and useful for other purposes than eating straight. Other than that I have a 30+ year-old grapefruit that I put in the ground last March in my very best micro-climate spot. It will be my only diva with the most protection and fussing. I couldn't keep it in a container any longer, so weighed the risk. I have no idea the type or rootstock.

Welcome, Brigid, glad you found us and have joined us. Lot's of very knowledgeable citrus folk, and many from the Gulf states, so you're in good company. Look forward to your citrus additions and how you manage for winter!

Thank you very much!! I will be sure to update my grapefruit's winter survival. I mentioned somewhere else that it was in a container for a long time and wasn't happy. Now it looks great. What a difference! I hope it will survive to produce fruit again. Then I can find out what it is.

Hershell! Are you on the Coastal Plain? Georgia's climate changes so fast. On the Piedmont the azaleas won't have buds, but in Valdosta they can be in full flower. Though I worry about ya'll with the drought.

Brigid, I am 18 miles north of Valdosta. We are getting a little rain but not enough to run off. I have a job in Alpharetta but it is too wet to get sight prep finished so I can build the green houses.

Hershell, what a pretty area you are in! I hate hearing about your rain situation, though. Fingers crossed for the future.

Wow, green houses! We are soaked up here for now, but no high hopes for the summer. I'm in north metro Atlanta below the river. I'm really looking forward to seeing your posts to learn about citrus in South Georgia.

If I can grow citrus in ground up here in the mountains, you should be able to down there in "Hotlanta"
