Wabasso: Citrus stand keeps Indian River tradition alive

By Chris Buckman
Sunday, November 4, 2007

The families of Countryside Citrus are upholding a great tradition of Indian River County citrus industry as they reopened their packinghouse, citrus sales and small gift shop Monday. They are on 81st Street. They are here to stay and offer the public the best citrus available. There are very few companies in this area still growing and selling the fruit of Indian River County only. They have been growing it since the mid-1900s, and even great-great grandfathers started growing citrus in Orlando in the late 1800s. This was Mr. Ross, who was Flo Van Antwerp's great grandfather.

So they do know citrus, and they invite you to come see them in their old-style fruit stand and groves. They are open from 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday.

Indian River district fruit has an excellent reputation in our state-and is recognized by tourists who have purchased it in the past.I remember our instructor purchasing some "Indian River"Navel Oranges while we were on a field trip with our Citrus Culture class that had beautiful color and smooth unblemished skin-we all agreed that they tasted great-but we were quite suprised to find later upon testing the ratio of total soluble solids to total acid that the fruit was immature by legal definition Shocked I suspect that as few people as there are actually testing for fruit maturity that a lot of immature fruit is marketed-BUT I saw immediately that legal definitions do not necessarily match our tastebuds Very Happy I sure could use some pretty immature Indian River fruit right now Very Happy
