Marmalade Festival sponsors offer to pay admission price

Published Date: 25 January 2010

IF your name is Frank Cooper, or you're a Rose or a Robertson, you are invited to a bit of a spread in Cumbria on February 14.

To celebrate its sponsorship of three categories at The World's Original Marmalade Festival, held at Dalemain Mansion and Historic Gardens near Penrith in Cumbria, Premier Foods, which has the marmalade brands of Frank Cooper's, Robertson's and Rose's, is offering to pay the admission price to the Festival for people sharing these names.

All you need to do is take proof of identity, in the form of a utility bill, driving licence or passport showing your name, and you will be able to enjoy some of the most sumptuous marmalade tasting in the world.

Marmalades submitted for judging in the Festival will be laid out for you to sample and you can also enjoy a food fair, with a marmalade focus, and tour the mansion and gardens of Dalemain.

Premier Foods is sponsoring the Children's, Military and Any Citrus categories of the Festival. The first of these is open to any child up to the age of 16. Military marmalade will come from serving servicemen and women and Any Citrus is a specialist category for marmalades made from different citrus fruits.Other quirky categories are Clergy, Man-Made and Tipsy Marmalade, (including alcohol!).

There are also categories for bed and breakfast establishments, Seville orange marmalades, dark and chunky marmalades, romantic marmalade and artisan-made marmalade.

All marmalades are scored by judges and winners in each category receive a prize. There is a silver cup for the best overall marmalade, given by the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers , and any double gold winner in the artisan competition will have the chance to have their marmalade sold in Fortnum & Mason, Piccadilly.

Festival founder and organiser, Jane Hasell-McCosh, says: "The idea of celebrating National Marmalade Weekend here, with various people who share a name with some of Britain's best-loved marmalades is as quirky as our Festival itself and just the sort of fun we wish to enjoy as we spread the love of marmalade across the world.

"We look forward to welcoming lots of Frank Coopers, Roses and Robertsons on February 14. Who knows, we might even get a winner with one of these names, if they also enter a marmalade for judging."

All details of how to enter are available at www.marmaladefestival.com The closing date for entries is February 1 for artisans and February 7 for the amateur categories.

Squeeze most out fruity weekend

29th January 2010

Dalemain - Penrith

Enjoy a Valentine’s weekend with a difference this year, by getting fruity and squeezing the ultimate enjoyment out of a fabulous, food-focused event.

The World’s Original Marmalade Festival is taking place at Dalemain – a mansion and historic gardens near Penrith, Cumbria – on February 14. This Festival aims to spread the love of marmalade across the globe, whilst also raising significant sums for charity, from its marmalade competition and Festival day.

The event on February 14 runs from 10am to 4pm and features world-class marmalades nestled along home-made favourites, which might have tempted the marmalade judges’ taste buds just as much and become rising stars of the marmalade world.

Tempting tastings of an array of Seville, other citrus, dark and chunky and adventurous marmalades will be on offer to visitors to Dalemain, each having been judged and scored by some of the most discerning marmalade experts in the country.

The prizes will be handed over at 11.30 am, including the Silver Cup for the Best in Show, presented by The Worshipful Company of Fruiterers. It will then also be revealed whether there is a double gold winner in the Artisan category. If so, they will have the opportunity to sell their marmalade in Fortnum & Mason and showcased in a special Marmalade Breakfast at Fortnums in March 2010.

In the ancient Dalemain courtyard, a food fair organised by Orton Farmers’ Market will delight visitors throughout the day with some Valentine’s Day specials, citrus-flavoured produce and other foods from the artisan producers who have made Orton a must-visit market for foodies everywhere.

Children will be able to enjoy a citrus hunt and fun and games with Paddington Bear – a patron of the Festival, whilst the adults get added value from the opportunity to tour the mansion and see the stunning Snowdrop and Aconite Walk in the Dalemain gardens.

Admission to the Festival is free for children and costs £4 for an adult. Profits from the admission fees will be added to the total donated to the charities which benefit from this event – Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland and Help For Heroes.

Those heading up to the Eden Valley for the weekend could also enjoy a fun-filled lunchtime ‘Peal of Marmalade’ concert, at St Andrew’s Church, Penrith, at 12.30 pm on February 13. The concert will feature the Wordsworth Singers and will include choral and instrumental pieces sure to bring a smile to the proceedings.

The concert will have a citrus feel and will include an arrangement of ‘Oranges and Lemons’ especially written for the Wordsworth Singers by Daryl Runswick. The singers will also be joined by local instrumentalists and school choirs to perform a ‘Marmalade Suite’ commissioned from composer Liz Sharma.

The morning of February 14 will also feature a special Marmalade Service at St Andrew’s Church, Dacre, near Penrith, with guest preacher The Very Reverend Mark Boyling, Dean of Carlisle.

More information about the competition, the Festival day and the other events leading up to it is available at marmaladefestival.com.

A road 1 mile east of my farm is call Penrith Road. Reading the word "Penrith" in the above post, is the only other place that I have ever seen the word. No one around her seems to know how the local road ever got the name. Interesting. - Millet (1,083-)
