Wow, I'm embarassed to admit I had no idea how bad the problem was in some countries. For instance, 20% of the children in Zambia don't reach their fifth birthday.
Here is the article http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0707/feature1/ _________________ Harvey |

"The ban on DDT," says Gwadz of the National Institutes of Health, "may have killed 20 million children." Although not directly responsible but certainly INDIRECTLY responsible, Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring, inadvertently has GREATLY contributed to the deaths of hundreds millions of men women and children in the poorest countries of the world. - Millet |

Malaria is a devastating disease that I have seen with my own eyes. High fever weakness and death if not treated. There is some evidence that DDT is not nearly as bad as it was once thought to be. I truly believe that the band should be lifted to provide relief to countries that suffer from this awful disease.

My friends son had it when he was 2 years old. He was at Children's Hospital in Boston for months. He is o.k. now, but it was real scary for too long. We were told that he will never be bitten again, I don't know how, but there it is. _________________ Disneygirl |

Malaria is a horrible disease. My uncle got the worse wersion of it, in africa, and they say your chance of surviving it was slim, and if you do survive, youll most likely have some sort of brain damage(from what I remember). He survived and had no brain damage (freom what we can tell). My aunt and my grandpa had the lesser version of it and both turned out fine aswell. |

The question of DDT use, and its impact on the environment, mosquito control, and agricultural, is a deep and complicated subject, with highly differing views held. Posts here caused me to revisit the subject. For those interested in learning more for themselves, I found this a good place to begin.

Thanks Ned, I read the entire Wikipedia article, and of course the entire National Geographic article. There are certainly two sides to the DDT story. The environmental claims put forth by Rachel Carson's book against DDT as the cause of much environmental damage, and with EPA's stand on the subject which certainly adds weight to it. I wonder if the 100,000,000+++ malaria dead people would agree with the EPA and Rachel? - Millet |

After giving it some thought, I think it is time for me to put this subject to rest. I believe any good can come from my continuing to comment on the issure. Therefore I withdraw from the debate.

After Ned withdrew his rebuttal, it then caused my response to answer nothing. Therefore I erased my answer. - Millet |

Well, Rachel is dead. And now she is rolling over.
Let's blame those other wacko environmentalists.
A nuclear bomb would wipe out the skeeters as well...................
