Laaz The Dypsis palms family is a very large group (140 types in the genus). Your palm Dypsis decipines is native to Madagascar. The epithet (decipines) is latin meaning "deceiving." I like the way they grow from the rachis at a steep angle to give the leaf a V shape. One thing about Dypsis decipines, is this species is temperamental in it climatic requirements, flourishing in nearly frostless Mediterranean (dry) climates but languishing in hot and moist subtropical climates, like SC. - M

This is kind of a tough one to grow. I started with about one hundred and ended up loosing them all. These trees burrow and sink their heal into the ground. Then it gets rot and that's all she wrote. I have a new plan for the next batch.

I have one I bought back in August. Doing great so far. I'm keeping it in a container until it gets to about 15 Gal size, then into the ground.

I started mine from seed and had them growing wonderfully for three years--dilligently stepping them up in pot size as needed. Then they all just up and died. I attributed it to the rotting of the core. As these palms grew, the core sinks into the ground and can/will rot. On my next batch, I am going to start them high and continue to remove dirt from the heel as it sinks over the years, hope fully this will address the issue. They stop sinking once they form trunk. Be careful before setting yours in the ground and do some research on them. It is sad when you loose them. When you plant your into the groun d, you might want to do so on a mound so you can remove the dirt from around the heal as appropriate. Just a suggestion.
