I have the opportunity to purchase a potted Indio Mandarinquat. It is currently in a 15 gallon container and is measuring in at 6 feet. I plan to replant to the ground.

Wondering if this is something I can get in CA nursery in the next 6 months, or if I should go for this purchase instead.

I have a spot for it, but the landscaping will not be completed for a few months yet. If this is the type of tree I won't readily find at a nursery, Then I'll have to buy it now.

Any input?

What price should I be paying for something like this?

I'm near Santa Barbara CA.

Thanks

Indio Mandarinquat are often found at Home Depot and Lowe's in 5 gallon pots, sold at about $21 - $23. Some times WalMart carry these trees also. It is a bit harder to find than Lemons, Valencias and Washington Navels.

If you want to plant the tree inground, buy the smaller sized trees, they will grow better, and often outgrow those that you planted from bigger pots. My preference has always been to buy citri-pots, the ones that are sold for about $7 to $11 in square tall pots ( 4"x4"x18" ). The next best thing would be the 5 gal pots. I would only buy the 15 gal pots if that is the last size that have the cultivar that I want.

But for citrus trees maintained in containers, I go the opposite way, the bigger the container trees, the better.

I would find the 15gal too costly for my taste. A 1 gal or 5 gal would be my choice.

FYI-My Indio M has some good points and a few neg ones.

Grows fast
Looks great for Christmas time
Good marmalade

Only taste ok
Not alot of uses other than drinks
