Here are a couple of citrus fruits you won't find in your local shop!
Both are about the size of a grapefruit and I photographed them together simply because my potted plants happened to produce one ripe fruit of these varieties at the same time.
On the left is an unusual local fruit from the Catalan region of south-east France. Known in French as 'Poncire de Collioure' its parentage is obscure but thought to have the citron in its ancestry. Although the flesh is acid and only really any use as marmalade, the fruit is very ornamental with a pale orange pebbly skin.
Centre is a standard navel orange for size and colour comparison.
On the right is a Bergamot, Citrus bergamia, used in France and Italy to produce an oil for the perfume industry and for flavouring Earl Grey tea.
Here are some more pictures of the cut fruits and seeds.
