LA HABRA For a weekend in April, La Habra will turn the clock back 100 years while the city celebrates its roots as a citrus producing region with its inaugural Spring Citrus Fair 2010.
Hosted by the La Habra Chamber of Commerce, the Spring Citrus Fair will take place April 9-11 along a stretch of La Habra Boulevard between Euclid and Cypress streets.
The fair will honor the La Habra Valley's citrus industry of the early 1900s with an array of activities and entertainment that include: memorabilia and tours of the Historical Museum, food competition, music and carnival rides.
"We are encouraging people to dress in period attire," chamber spokesperson Carolyn Campbell said. "There is a lot of historical detail. That is what this is about."
Adjacent streets will be "re-named" to reflect the citrus industry's past and signature mascots have also been created: Limon the Lemon, Val Encia Orange and Big Hass Avocado.
The trio will be making public appearances at area schools in the coming months to educate and promote the event, which is expected to draw about 25,000 visitors, Campbell said.
Chamber organizers expect the Spring Citrus Fair to be an annual event, which will draw visitors from the entire region in the same way the Orange International Street Fair and the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival do.
Campbell said organizers are looking for vendors and sponsors for the event, which will serve as a fundraiser for the chamber and other local nonprofits.
Hours of the fair will be: 4 to11 p.m. April 9; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. April 10; and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. April 11.
