Is there a real difference between Meyer Lemon and Improved Meyer Lemon or is it a marketing ploy? In Florida I can't find "Improved" and when I asked I was told all Meyer Lemons are "Improved" now. What's the truth? _________________ Charles in Pensacola

my understanding is Meyer Lemon was a carrier of a citrus disease, a virus. they found this out in California and it was no longer sold/propagated. eventually they developed an "Improved" Meyer Lemon that does not carry the virus.
so all Meyer Lemon sold now are Improved Meyer Lemon.
i am sure someone will give more detail than that soon. _________________ looking for cold hardy citrus

The virus was Tristesa. All Meyer lemons carried Tristesa until one tree was found without the virus at Four Winds Growers in California in the 1950's. All improved Meyer lemons were propagated from that tree. Meyer lemon was the Typhoid Mary of Tristesa. I doubt there are any non-improved Meyer Lemons propagated professionally anymore. _________________ Jim

I hope not. That eliminates one more thing to worry about on my list.

I planted two Meyer lemon trees last summer. The first one had a tag saying it was a Meyer lemon, then a month later I came across a little guy with a tag saying it was an Improved Meyer lemon. So I have one of each and the only difference between the two is the Improved Meyer has about twenty nice small lemons on it while the unimproved seems to have become dormant for the winter. |

lotusblos, no matter what your tags say, or does not say, BOTH of your Meyer lemons are indeed Improved Meyer lemon trees. Regular(unimproved) Meyer lemon trees have not been sold for years. - Millet (748-) |

I noticed once that our local nursery was selling a grafted tree labeled as "improved Meyer" but rooted cuttings as "Meyer" while being unable to explain the difference in price.
I think we are talking about less than perfect labeling here too. All Meyer lemons on the market are "improved", as Millet says.
Good luck! |
