I tasted some seedy Duncan grapefruit grown here in SE Texas 500 miles north of the Texas Valley grapefruit growing area along the Mexican border. About a month ago they were good but still somewhat tart. The ones tonight are starting to taste like the gold standard for grapefruit, the legendary Duncans I tasted from the Bradenton,FL area late in the season in April as I remember.

I also tasted some red grapefruit grown by the same grower, my friend in Lumberton,TX. The reds were sweet but insipid. I've maintained for a long while that reds don't have very good flavor around here, but try and tell the local buyer that. They have been brainwashed that the redder, the better.

The other white grapefruit I tasted tonight was the bloomsweet. It is good but not as good as the Duncan. A month ago bloomsweet and Duncan tasted about the same. My marsh seedless whites are not tasting as good as the Duncans either.

The golden grapefruit are long gone. They are ready by Thanksgiving and somewhat over-ripe by now.

For me it's golden grapefruit in the early season and Duncan in the late season. Both are very seedy but you can't beat the flavor.

I tried to topwork the top of my golden grapefruit tree to duncan a couple years ago. I had two budwoods, one seedling and one bearing. It was my bad luck to use the seedling on my tree. I had 3 fruit this year and I can't see any blooms on the several large branches I topworked. My friend got the bearing budwood on the tree I sold him. Oh well! Lucky I have him as a friend and he has several mature grapefruit trees to provide me with plenty of golden, duncan, and bloomsweet grapefruit.
