While in Texas running to get light back on from Hurricant Ike I found a big and I mean big Ponderosa lemon blown off the tree. Took it hime and took out the seeds...hot water wash and treat with fungicide and planted the next day in a big pot. Ended up with 60 or so seed. Seed sprouted....all 60 of them. I repotted today to relieve the crowding and to get them in individual pots since they had four leaves on them and were straining to get going. Know I will have to take care of them through the cold spots in Jan and Feb. One seed is here. Look at it. Its a varigated one. I studied it closely and even though the pics do not do it justice you can make it out. Now all I have to do is to keep it from croaking and get it growing. Hope that it does not lose its varigation. and makes me a good tree. Any suggestions..........................David

David any updates on the variegated seedling. As Ponderosa does not come true it should be interesting if it has survived.

Update
Of the seedlings only one was varigated. I nursed it and took great care to see that it prospered and grew....but despite all the care and nursing it started into decline and passed on to that great citrus burial ground......I wish I could have saved it but ....it was not to be. Did the same thing with a native poncirus seedling that came up and was varigated........nursed it to death...it also passed.............If I did not have bad luck I would not know what good luck was.....I guess. Sorry to hear that, David.
Just last night I was reading someone's description on how to grow an unusual or rare plant:

If you buy an XXX and are somehow lucky enough to keep it alive, you will notice it is, well, singularly in want of solitude. Most plants aren't communicative. They live, grow and die without expressing themselves to you. XXX are unlike all other plants I've ever had. One day, you walk away after carefully observing the tree's progress and realize it did not appreciate your looking at it, so you start pretending you're looking at something else while casually walking by. I'm not kidding or nuts. Other owners have reported the same. Perhaps this is why XXX enjoy the solitude of craggy hillsides in lonely inhospitable deserts. I think it gets nervous or something. You'll know when you upset it as it will start dropping leaves. DO NOT look at it too long. DO NOT move (jostle) it about. DO NOT change its watering or fertilizing schedule. Only repot it once every several years when absolutely necessary. Leave it alone!

The good thing, however, is that for as temperamental as this tree is, it is also very forgiving and will bounce back if you remedy whatever it is your doing that upsets it.

I've often told people not to fuss over their rare or treasured plants, this lady takes it a whole 'nuther step! Gave me a good laugh.

Maybe you looked at your seedling too long.
Susan
