ORANGE COVE, Calif.—Citrus growers in California's Central Valley are on edge after two nights of subfreezing temperatures that recalled last winter's cold snap that destroyed the state's orange crop.

Wind machines that pull warmer air from above were turned on for the first time this season in California groves Friday night, growers said.

The National Weather Service says temperatures in the region dipped into the upper 20s overnight Friday and Saturday, but were likely to climb above freezing Sunday night. No damage to crops has been reported.

Forecasters say conditions so far are less threatening than those last winter because there is more moisture in the air and light winds are keeping temperatures slightly warmer.

A January deep freeze destroyed more than $1.2 billion in citrus and other crops in California.

Well it dipped down briefly to 26 deg F in Davis. All of my bananas are still okay. My new grafted budwood sprouts are all alive, including the Sarawak. Fortunately, there was a very nice gradual transition into the cold that has hardened my subtropicals. I hope none of those arctic blast will drop by for a visit. They usually do, anytime between January to April.
