I've come across this in one of my emails. It helps a lot when you are buying. The zebra stripes are easier to spot than where the product is made. Still, it only helps a little, because some of our greedy businessmen simply repack the items from China in order to have the stripes in the US. But at least, this would be helpful.

The whole world is scared of China made "black hearted goods". Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ? Let me tell u...the first 3 digits of bar code 690, 691, 692 are MADE IN CHINA

471 is Made in Taiwan like shown below.

This is our human right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the public, therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves.

Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "made in china", so they don't show from which country it is made.
However, you may now refer to the barcode, remember if the first 3 digits are:
690-692 then it is made in China .
000 ~ 099 USA & CANADA
300 ~ 370 FRANCE
400 ~ 449 GERMANY
490 - JAPAN
500 - UK

Doesn't work for me. I just looked on a Ravensburger toy of my daughter. It is written "Made in china" and the code is 400.

It could have been repackaged in Germany, just as I warned earlier.

Also, the stores will sometimes use two sets of SKU's. One is the manufacturer's zebra, the other could be the store's or the repackaging plant. Thus you have only the local zebra number. But you have to do more sampling instead of deciding your conclusions based on single item or single locality or single region.

zebra - refers to barcode labels, not the animals, Smile

Another big possibility is that France have their own guidelines different than the one in the US, or France does not strictly enforce or does not have the rules for barcode labeling of various products and relating the number sets to their origins.

Yes, it might be that.

No, I don't think so.

Thank you Joe. As you said, it may be "helpful" to detect a product from China. I don't want anything from China, especially after hearing about "wormy" chocolate & used condoms in elastic hairbands etc.

I don't know if the "don't buy stuff Made in China" is just an American thing or not.

I'm an engineer and my company send me all over the world (Canada, Europe and Asia) to setup and troubleshoot semiconductor equipment.

My impression is that the people there hate "Made in USA" products. As one of my friends in the Netherlands said, "they're junk, especially your cars." I've heard the same comments in Asia (South Korea, Sinapore, Hong Kong, Australia).

Europe and Asia seem to love "Made in Japan."

I had my fair share of crappy products from China and my USA. Sometimes I think they're one and the same.
