Has anyone gotten their hands on a Dekopon tree in CA yet?

Some interesting info I ran across regarding Dekopon:
http://nvdmc.org/publicvarieties.html
(see Shiranui Dekopon entry)

Based on reports on a different forum, people in FL have been able to get their hands on trees there already from their local Home Depot and Lowes. They're being sold as Shiranui Tangerine trees. I'm sad that they're not available here in CA yet.

It would be nice to just go to lowes and get one of those. Very Happy

Not yet. I know CCPP was working on a Dekopon/Shiranui budwood source as of this time last year. They had a line on some budwood that was not from their Citrus Collection source (which is owned by Griffiths Farms, and cannot be used in the budwood program due to patenting restrictions), but that fell through. They were trying to source another option, but then the who lid blew off with the HLB discovery in Los Angeles county, so all that got put on the back burner for CCPP, as they needed to make sure they had all their varieties completely under screen for protection. So, when I am up there in February, I'll be sure to ask about this.

Great. Do report back, Fred. Several of us in California have had store-bought Dekopons (sold as "Sumo" mandarins here), and weren't overly impressed with them. But, I have had several off the tree at the Citrus Variety Collection, and those were very good. Worth a spot in my garden if I can ever acquire budwood or a tree here in Calif. Be very interested to see how it performs in FL.
